EXFORGEHCT

5MG/160MG/12.5MG

Exforge HCT (5mg/160mg/12.5mg) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

It is a combination of three active ingredients: amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker), valsartan (an angiotensin II receptor blocker), and hydrochlorothiazide (a thiazide diuretic).

Indications

This combination medication is typically prescribed for patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on dual therapy, or as an initial treatment for patients who are likely to need multiple drugs to achieve their blood pressure goals.

Mechanism of Action

• Amlodipine: Relaxes blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.

• Valsartan: Blocks the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels.

• Hydrochlorothiazide: Helps the body get rid of extra salt and water through urine.

Key Warnings and Precautions

• Pregnancy: This medication can cause serious harm or death to an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. It should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is detected.

• Hypotension: Symptomatic blood pressure drops may occur, particularly in patients who are volume- or salt-depleted.

• Kidney and Liver Function: Caution is advised in patients with severe kidney or liver impairment. Monitoring of renal function and electrolytes is standard medical practice.

Common Side Effects

Side effects can include dizziness, headache, swelling of the ankles or feet (edema), fatigue, and nausea.
